Guy’s Cancer Academy launched in February 2019 and provides education and training on every aspect of cancer care. We develop knowledge, skills and attributes that meet the needs of our patients and staff.
We provide face-to-face education and training, online learning, masterclasses, conferences, preceptorship programmes, and university-accredited courses.
Dr Simon Hughes - Cancer education and training lead
Simon has an active role in research and development (R&D). He led the Trust’s clinical oncology / radiotherapy R&D team for five years before stepping down to focus on his own research activity. He remains on the editorial panel for the British Journal of Urology International.
Simon is joint-lead for cancer education and training at Kings’ Healthcare Partners, having previously held lead roles at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
At the national level, Simon is the treasurer of the British Uro-oncology Group, a co-opted member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons: oncology section; and is a past president of the oncology section of the Royal Society of Medicine.
Dr. Verna Lavender - Head of Guy’s Cancer Academy
Verna is a cancer nurse academic and researcher. She is also President Elect of the UK Oncology Nursing Society. Prior to working at Guy's Cancer Academy she worked as a Senior Lecturer in Cancer Care at Oxford Brookes University and an Oxford Clinical Academic Fellow at the Oxford Academic Health Sciences Centre. In 2007, she worked as a Macmillan cancer education facilitator at the United Bristol Healthcare NHS Trust.
She has a professional background in adult nursing, and worked at the University of Bath as a research scientist following her PhD in cell biology.
Julie Bishop - Business Support Manager
Bhav Radia - Innovative Pedagogy Lead
Bhav leads on the development and delivery of online and blended learning. Prior to joining the Academy, he was Head of Learning Innovation for Guy's and St Thomas'. In this role, he established a new EdTech funciton within the Trust and his teams courses have been access nationally by over 20,000 health professionals.
He is currently completing a part-time PhD at Cambridge University which is funded by the Guy's and St Thomas' Charity.
