About Us

Guy’s Cancer Academy launched in February 2019 and we provide education and training on every aspect of cancer care.

Our multiprofessional team provides and facilitates face-to-face education and training, online learning, masterclasses, conferences, preceptorship programmes, and university-accredited courses.

Simon

Dr Simon Hughes - Cancer Education and Training Lead

Simon has an active role in research and development (R&D). He led the Trust’s clinical oncology / radiotherapy R&D team for five years before stepping down to focus on his own research activity. He remains on the editorial panel for the British Journal of Urology International.

Simon is joint-lead for cancer education and training at Kings’ Healthcare Partners, having previously held lead roles at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

At the national level, Simon is the treasurer of the British Uro-oncology Group, a co-opted member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons: oncology section; and is a past president of the oncology section of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Verna

Dr Verna Lavender - Head of Guy’s Cancer Academy

Verna is a cancer nurse academic and researcher. She is also President Elect of the UK Oncology Nursing Society. Prior to working at Guy's Cancer Academy she worked as a Senior Lecturer in Cancer Care at Oxford Brookes University and an Oxford Clinical Academic Fellow at the Oxford Academic Health Sciences Centre. In 2007, she worked as a Macmillan cancer education facilitator at the United Bristol Healthcare NHS Trust.

She has a professional background in adult nursing, and worked at the University of Bath as a research scientist following her PhD in cell biology.

Bhav

Bhav Radia - Online Learning Lead

Bhav leads on the development and delivery of online and blended learning. Prior to joining the Academy, he was Head of Learning Innovation for Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust. In this role, he established a new EdTech funciton within the Trust. Their courses have been access nationally by over 30,000 health professionals and won several awards.

He is currently completing a part-time PhD at the University of Cambridge which is funded by the Guy's and St Thomas' Charity and Charter Scholarship from Homerton College.

Yvonne

Yvonne Francis - Faculty Development Lead

Yvonne has 25 years of nursing experience, the majority in the Haemato-oncology setting beginning as a staff nurse on a haematology- oncology inpatient ward, progressing to Sister of a Haematology day ward and currently divides her time between her clinical role as a clinical nurse specialist in Haematology and her education role as Faculty development lead for Guys Cancer Academy.

Through her role as Faculty development lead for Guys Cancer Academy she supports, develops and delivers education and training to all staff involved in providing care for patients with cancer with the overall aim of increasing the quality of cancer care and patient experience. She has participated in writing education materials for both patients and colleagues and presenting at both national and international events, she has recently co-authored the RCN endorsed first national guidance for therapeutic venesections.

Julie

Julie Bishop - Business Manager

Julie oversees the Academy’s finances, contracts and HR. She also provides administration support for all our events and courses.

Prior to joining the Academy, she was the Business Manager for the Cancer Programme at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust. Julie has worked for the Trust since June 2007, and within cancer specifically for the past 12 years.
